Motion Sickness Facts and Information

  1. For motion sickness or sea sickness: While in the water, be careful not to swallow sea water. It makes many people nauseous. Make sure your mouthpiece fits well and that you have your regulator comfortably and securely in your mouth so as to keep water out.

  2. To reduce the effect of motion sickness, sea sickness or altitude sickness avoids alcohol and caffeine. If you have respiratory problems, eliminate foods that produce inflammation and mucus, such as dairy products, fruit, and sugar. Ginger sliced and chewed may prevent the onset of motion sickness. Encapsulated ginger, crystallized ginger, or ginger snaps may also help. Ginger has been shown to be more effective than antihistamines if taken one hour before traveling. Sips of lemon water may help relieve nausea during an episode.

  3. Most cases of dizziness and motion sickness are mild and self-treatable disorders.

  4. Most medications for motion sickness need to be taken at least 30 minutes before exposure to the activity that can cause the problem.

  5. What causes Motion Sickness, sea sickness or altitude sickness: Age, Children suffer more from motion sickness than adults and usually adults over 50 rarely suffer from motion sickness

  6. Snacks or crackers a little and often during the trip will also help to reduce motion sickness.

  7. Air sickness is more problematic for motion sickness, however. An outside view doesn't necessarily help in aviation, because flight constantly presents sensory conflicts. During a coordinated turn, for example, our eyes show a tilted horizon while our vestibular sense says we're perfectly upright. Uncoordinated maneuvers and turbulence provide even more complex conflicts. In a cloud, we may receive all sorts of vestibular sensations while our eyes report a featureless, horizon less void.

  8. To help motion sickness always ride where your eyes will see the same motion that your body and inner ears feel, e.g. sit in the front seat of the car and look at the distant scenery; go up on the deck of the ship and watch the horizon; sit by the window of the airplane and look outside. In an airplane choose a seat over the wings where the motion is the least.

  9. If you begin to feel sea sick, or motion sick; if you're not sure you are prone to seasickness, try reading a newspaper while in a moving car. If you have no problem with that, the chances are you should have no problem with ships either.

  10. What causes Motion Sickness, sea sickness or altitude sickness: Conflicting Messages, One message or signal comes from the middle (or inner) ear that controls balance and the other message comes from the eyes. During changes in position caused by travel these two signals conflict or disagree. Or seen another way, reading a book the view remains stable while the body is twisted and turned during travel. These two signals end up at the nausea center of the brain and with such confusion is it a surprise that motion sickness is the result.
