Motion Facts and Information

  1. Acupressure bands have started appearing in pilot shops and catalogs. These are elastic bands with protrusions that apply pressure to the wrist, stimulating the median nerve in the fashion of acupuncture.

  3. To relieve motion sickness or sea sickness keep each other occupied and do not think about getting sick.

  4. Motion sickness drugs, available over the counter or by prescription, can cause unpleasant and sometimes serious side effects. Many of these drugs may not be suitable for children or, in certain circumstances, even for adults.

  5. If you feel nauseous and about to succumb, please avoid the entry and exit areas of the boat. Hang your head over the gunwales and avoid "chumming" in areas other divers must use.

  6. Massage or other relaxation techniques may help control motion sickness.

  7. Acupressure bands for motion sickness can help prevent the unpleasant symptoms of travel sickness.

  8. For motion sickness or sea sickness: Do not drink alcoholic beverages for several hours before a dive. Alcohol tends to dehydrate the body. Its other symptoms are not desirable either when diving. Alcohol can prevent the REM (Rapid Eye Movement) stage of sleep, the one in which you dream and your brain rests. You may feel tired and un alert from just a few drinks, two qualities not conducive to safe diving. If you do plan on drinking, make every third drink a glass of water. It will reduce dehydration and your chances for a hangover.

What causes Motion Sickness, sea sickness or altitude sickness: Conflicting Messages, One message or signal comes from the middle (or inner) ear that controls balance and the other message comes from the eyes. During changes in position caused by travel these two signals conflict or disagree. Or seen another way, reading a book the view remains stable while the body is twisted and turned during travel. These two signals end up at the nausea center of the brain and with such confusion is it a surprise that motion sickness is the result.

  10. There are various prescription and nonprescription drugs available for motion sickness. Some drugs prevent motion sickness and some treat it. You will need to find the one that works best for you.
