Motion Facts and Information

  1. Techniques to reduce motion sickness, seasickness, and altitude sickness: Don't read while traveling, Reading increases the conflict between what the eye sees and what the boat feels which is the cause of motion sickness. So if you suffer from motion sickness do not read while traveling.

  2. For motion sickness or sea sickness: Have some water and fruit before and between dives. It can help by re-hydrating you.

  3. To relieve motion sickness or sea sickness avoid fatty and greasy food several hours before you travel.

  4. Motion sickness is the nausea, disorientation and fatigue that can be induced by head motion. The first sign is usually pallor. Yawning, restlessness and a cold sweat forming on the upper lip or forehead often follow. As symptoms build, an upset stomach, fatigue or drowsiness may occur. The final stages are characterized by nausea and vomiting.

  5. Acupressure wrist bands put pressure on the point called P6. Many people claim it works. It may in some individuals. How it works is unknown; however the Chinese state it works by balancing the ying and yang of your body.

  6. Beer for motion sickness or sea sickness: Beer initially may keep you well hydrated and also has a sedating effect (not many people have nausea or vomiting while asleep). But the bad effect is that it may eventually cause dehydration. Remember drinking beer may eventually make you pee like a racehorse.

  7. Motion sickness drugs, available over the counter or by prescription, can cause unpleasant and sometimes serious side effects. Many of these drugs may not be suitable for children or, in certain circumstances, even for adults.

  8. Motion sickness generally clears up once you leave the car, boat, or airplane, so you'll rarely find yourself in a health care provider's office during an episode. But your provider may be able to recommend ways to prevent and treat the condition for your next trip.

  10. To avoid motion sickness, sea sickness or altitude sickness: Eat bland foods -- crackers and bread, or bananas rice, applesauce and toast.
