Motion Facts and Information

  1. To relieve motion sickness or sea sickness keep children occupied. Have them count cars, boats, etc. or play games.

  2. Approximately 90% of adults will experience motion sickness at some time in their lives. However, it is much more common for children.

  3. For motion sickness or sea sickness: Once you are in the water, drop down below the surface (make sure your buddy knows that this is the plan). The top ten or fifteen feet or so (3 to 4.5 meters), more in rough seas can still have a surge that will have an effect on you. Dropping below that can have a calming effect on your senses (and your stomach).

  4. Motion Eaze for motion sickness can help prevent the unpleasant symptoms of travel sickness.

  5. To prevent motion sickness or sea sickness or altitude sickness: Do not watch or talk to another traveler who is having motion sickness.

  6. If you feel nauseous and about to succumb, please avoid the entry and exit areas of the boat. Hang your head over the gunwales and avoid "chumming" in areas other divers must use.

  7. Motion sickness is a conflict between your senses. A fluid filled canal in your inner ear that controls your sense of balance tells your brain that your body is moving, while your eyes, looking into the cabin of the boat, tells your brain that you are not moving. That conflict can cause your body to be out of balance, and we know how the digestive system feels about that.

  8. For motion sickness or sea sickness: Avoid gasoline or diesel fumes. They can put you over the edge literally and figuratively. Stay out of direct sunlight as much as possible. Avoid becoming overheated and dehydrated.

  9. The movement of a boat on a fluid sea creates stress in the portions of the brain responsible for balance. Perhaps that stress causes the brain to start malfunctioning as the land based environment it understands is suddenly not behaving, as it should.

  10. Pilots often report that their family members and other passengers are far more prone to motion sickness than they are.
