Motion Facts and Information

  1. Motion sickness is a conflict between your senses. A fluid filled canal in your inner ear that controls your sense of balance tells your brain that your body is moving, while your eyes, looking into the cabin of the boat, tells your brain that you are not moving. That conflict can cause your body to be out of balance, and we know how the digestive system feels about that.

  2. What causes Motion Sickness, sea sickness or altitude sickness: Racial and Genetic Differences

  3. If you begin to feel sea sick, or motion sick; apply cold packs or ice to the eyes & neck

  4. Another treatment for sea sickness or motion sickness is an acupressure wrist band. It applies pressure to a particular point on your wrist, which can prevent the feeling of nausea.

  5. What causes Motion Sickness, sea sickness or altitude sickness: Racial and Genetic Differences

  6. For motion sickness or sea sickness: Caffeinated beverages (including soft drinks) should be avoided as they are diuretics (make you urinate), which accelerate dehydration. The gas in carbonated beverages has negative responses in some, avoid them also.

  7. If you begin to feel sea sick, or motion sick; try to stay in fresh air

  8. To help motion sickness always ride where your eyes will see the same motion that your body and inner ears feel, e.g. sit in the front seat of the car and look at the distant scenery; go up on the deck of the ship and watch the horizon; sit by the window of the airplane and look outside. In an airplane choose a seat over the wings where the motion is the least.

  9. Different textbooks have different definitions, but basically motion sickness -- also called air sickness, sea sickness or car sickness -- is nausea and vomiting triggered by disturbance of the vestibular apparatus. The vestibular apparatus refers to the semicircular canals of the inner ear, which we use to maintain balance and sense orientation and movement.

  10. What causes Motion Sickness, sea sickness or altitude sickness: Pre Trip, Many times the previous 24 hours are the reason for motion sickness not the journey itself. Hangovers, over tiredness, anxiety, minor illnesses all contribute to motion sickness. A heavy meal, full of fat and possibly over spiced does not help either. Too many carbonated and or alcoholic drinks can unsettle your stomach which will make you more sensitive to motion sickness during the journey. Therefore if you are not fit, rested and healthy you will probably suffer more motion sickness than you usually do.
