Motion Facts and Information

  1. To avoid motion sickness, sea sickness or altitude sickness: On the airplane: ask for a window seat. The front of the plane may be preferable, as it is usually less noisy.

  2. One tablet of trip ease should be taken at the start of each trip, and one every hour while the problem persists.

  3. Acupressure bands have started appearing in pilot shops and catalogs. These are elastic bands with protrusions that apply pressure to the wrist, stimulating the median nerve in the fashion of acupuncture.

  4. To prevent motion sickness or sea sickness or altitude sickness: Avoid strong odors and spicy or greasy foods immediately before and during your travel. Medical research has not yet investigated the effectiveness of popular folk remedies such as soda crackers and & Seven Up® or cola syrup over ice.

  5. To prevent motion sickness or sea sickness or altitude sickness: Take one of the varieties of motion sickness medicines before your travel begins, as recommended by your physician.

  6. For motion sickness or sea sickness: Caffeinated beverages (including soft drinks) should be avoided as they are diuretics (make you urinate), which accelerate dehydration. The gas in carbonated beverages has negative responses in some, avoid them also.

  7. Ginger is a natural preventative for motion sickness, sea sickness or altitude sickness. It soothes a queasy stomach and has no side effects. You can get it in pill form, tablets or powder, as ginger root in many herb and health food stores, or as pickled ginger slices at Japanese food marts and even at many Japanese restaurants. Most serve it pickled with sushi, hand rolls, and other of their dishes.

  8. Motion sickness drugs, available over the counter or by prescription, can cause unpleasant and sometimes serious side effects. Many of these drugs may not be suitable for children or, in certain circumstances, even for adults.

  9. Acupressure bands for motion sickness can help prevent the unpleasant symptoms of travel sickness.

  10. Motion sickness produces a whole range of symptoms, of which nausea and vomiting are the most severe.
