Motion sickness, seasickness and altitude sickness happen when signals from the balance system of your body conflict with visual cues. For example, your body may sense rolling motions that you cannot see from inside a ship's cabin. Conversely, during a "virtual reality" simulation, your eyes perceive movement that your body does not experience. In addition, the structures of your inner ears can become unbalanced.

What causes Motion Sickness, sea sickness or altitude sickness: Pre Trip, Many times the previous 24 hours are the reason for motion sickness not the journey itself. Hangovers, over tiredness, anxiety, minor illnesses all contribute to motion sickness. A heavy meal, full of fat and possibly over spiced does not help either. Too many carbonated and or alcoholic drinks can unsettle your stomach which will make you more sensitive to motion sickness during the journey. Therefore if you are not fit, rested and healthy you will probably suffer more motion sickness than you usually do.

Some people experience nausea and even vomiting when riding in an airplane, automobile, or amusement park ride, and this is called motion sickness. Many people experience motion sickness when riding on a boat or ship, and this is called sea sickness even though it is the same disorder.

What Causes Motion Sickness, Seasickness or Altitude Sickness: In order for the body to determine where it is at all times, the brain combines visual information, touch information, inner ear information, and internal expectations. Under most circumstances, the senses and expectations agree. When they disagree, there is conflict, and motion sickness can occur.

If you feel nauseous and about to succumb, please avoid the entry and exit areas of the boat. Hang your head over the gunwales and avoid "chumming" in areas other divers must use.

Massage or other relaxation techniques may help control motion sickness.

For motion sickness or sea sickness: Avoid gasoline or diesel fumes. They can put you over the edge literally and figuratively. Stay out of direct sunlight as much as possible. Avoid becoming overheated and dehydrated.

For motion sickness or sea sickness: Once you are in the water, drop down below the surface (make sure your buddy knows that this is the plan). The top ten or fifteen feet or so (3 to 4.5 meters), more in rough seas can still have a surge that will have an effect on you. Dropping below that can have a calming effect on your senses (and your stomach).

What Can I Do for Motion Sickness: Do not read while traveling if you are subject to motion sickness, and do not sit in a seat facing backward.
