Motion Facts and Information

  1. Some things to remember for sea sickness - Fresh air is good but you want to stay low and to the stern of the boat. That is where you will encounter the least motion. The bow of the boat pounds through the waves, up and down the stern drags through the water. The ride is much smoother. The boat rocks from side to side. The higher you are the more movement you encounter.

  2. For motion sickness or sea sickness: Once you are in the water, drop down below the surface (make sure your buddy knows that this is the plan). The top ten or fifteen feet or so (3 to 4.5 meters), more in rough seas can still have a surge that will have an effect on you. Dropping below that can have a calming effect on your senses (and your stomach).

  3. For motion sickness or sea sickness: Get plenty of rest before diving. Weariness and exhaustion can make you more susceptible to other things that can bring on motion sickness. Do your gear preparation early the day before diving and take care of other business well before a proper bed time.

  4. If you begin to feel sea sick, or motion sick; Avoid strong odors

  5. Ginger is a natural preventative for motion sickness, sea sickness or altitude sickness. It soothes a queasy stomach and has no side effects. You can get it in pill form, tablets or powder, as ginger root in many herb and health food stores, or as pickled ginger slices at Japanese food marts and even at many Japanese restaurants. Most serve it pickled with sushi, hand rolls, and other of their dishes.

  6. Techniques to reduce motion sickness, seasickness, and altitude sickness: Eat during the trip,

  7. Another treatment for sea sickness or motion sickness is an acupressure wrist band. It applies pressure to a particular point on your wrist, which can prevent the feeling of nausea.

  8. To prevent motion sickness or sea sickness or altitude sickness: Do not watch or talk to another traveler who is having motion sickness.

  9. If you begin to feel sea sick, or motion sick; Eat frequent small quantities of soda crackers

  10. If you feel nauseous and about to succumb, please avoid the entry and exit areas of the boat. Hang your head over the gunwales and avoid "chumming" in areas other divers must use.
